Hi, there — Isabel here, founder and coach of The Morning Habit.

What is a Morning Habit? It’s a habit of being dedicated to optimizing mornings for bliss and success by consistently pursuing wholesome lifestyle, mindset, and sleep activities.

Topic of the week: Like the Evening Sun / Conquer your Circadian Rhythm

It’s the little things.

Like having lights on at night that don’t interrupt your melatonin production. Rather, ones that calm your nervous system to approach rest, replicating our innate internal response to the sunset.

Bright lights near bedtime tell your body that it’s still daytime. They keep your body in a state of “go”. Dim lights, especially with a sunset-like amber hue, instead cue your body’s sleep processes.

Take advantage of this knowledge.

Here’s how:

At least 15 minutes, but ideally 30 minutes or more, before the time you want to be asleep, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off all screens and lights.
  2. Close the blinds and/or curtains to prevent outside light from interfering.
  3. Turn on some dim, warm-hued lamps or light some candles. Create just enough light to see what you need to, whether it’s your closet because you’re picking out your clothes for tomorrow, the person that you’re talking to, or the card game that the two of you are playing.

Note that this works even if you want to be in bed at 10pm and you’re normally not able to fall asleep until after 11pm.

It’s a seriously brilliant hack, and it’s really that simple. It’s the foundation of the wind-down step in my online program + community membership.

After 15 minutes in dim light, the yawns will likely begin.

If they don’t, you might need to assess whether you have mental or physical energy that’s boiling over, and plan for either less caloric intake or greater physical or mental exertion during the daytime.
